Another Interview

I: So could you tell me what sort of music do you listen to?

C: I guess I listen to pop and indie music.

I: Could you give me some examples?

C: My favorite is this new song called Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles or the band called Surfaces.

I: Could you tell me more about your music?

C: Like what I like about it?

I: Yeah I guess.

C: I guess that I feel like it is uplifting music and not low or stuff like that.

I: So why do you listen to it anyway?

C: I usually listen to something in the background so it is not quiet. I also listen to it when I am doing something so I also listen to it when I am doing homework.

I: So how did you encounter music in the first place?

C: I listened to it when I was very young when I first got my first ipod. Me and my sister would always listen to it together and since music and culture is growing and changing and new artists are coming out and creating music and I just listen to whatever artist I enjoy.

I: So what sort of interactions do you have with your music?

C: I listen to the music or watch the interviews if they are shown. I do got to a concert if I can.

I: So what does that genre of music mean to anyway?

C: I feel like it just depends on what genre it is and if it has meaning to me then it would just be because of the artists voice or the style of music they make. If it is like worship music then I think it would have meaning it me.

I: So what does alternative music mean to you?

C: I feel like it is just a different style of music. I don’t really know.

I: OK. So what sort of associations do you have with the words ‘metal’ or ‘goth’ music?

C: I don’t have friends that listen to that music but I think it is like hardcore rock music. It is not something I would listen to personally.

I: What sort of perceptions do you have of it?

C: I feel like it is just very hardcore. I dont know.

I: Why does that sort of thought come to mind anyway?

C: I feel like it is just because I have seen music video of that kind and are wearing black and making rock music. That is just what comes to my mind.

I: How much experience would you say you have with that sort of genre of music anyway?

C: I don’t ever listen to it.

I: Could you give me your best description of what those genres sound like?

C: I feel like it is mostly screaming and the music is a lot of guitar or drums being amplified or loud.

I: How much would you say you know about the subcultures associated with the genre?

C: It depends on my music taste. I may listen to an artist but not all of their songs.

I: Have you ever met anyone who is considered a part of these subcultures?

C: I don’t think so.

I: What is opinion on the people who listen the genres of music?

C: I feel like everyone has their own style of what is good for them.

I: Do you think the media has any impact on the view of the subcultures of that music?

C: Yeah, I feel like the popularity that media has influences what music is listened or recommended to. It can bring more attention to an artist who are not as popular or well known.

I: Could you explain more about that?

C: For example… Justin Beiber became famous through media and has had a huge career through YouTube. If it wasn’t for media, he wouldn’t be as famous as he is now.

I: What is you take on the media’s perception of these genres and subcultures?

C: I feel like it depends on the artist but I feel like… I don’t really see people come out with music and people will either like or not like it. they just react to what they like to listen to.

I: Why do you think any genre of music is capable of bringing so many people together?

C: I feel like it is something similar to two people can listen together or even go to a concert you both like. I have a friend who also likes the same artist as me and I would send them tweets or texts about some band. I also go to concerts with her.

I: Do you think that the genre of music has any relevance in today’s culture, world, society, musical or otherwise?

C: Yeah. I feel like artist are always encouraging their listeners or followers to expand on what they do and not be scared to pursue what they want to do. They are always encouraging because they know that people have that sort of thing.

I: Anything else you would like to say about all of this?

C: Nope.

I: Thank you for your time.
