Random Ethnography Interview 2 people

I: So tell me. What sort of music do you two listen to?

1: Uh, I listen to a little bit of everything.

2: I guess pop definitely.

1: Yeah. Mostly pop.

I: I see. Can you give me some examples?

2: Oh shit. Uh…

1: Could I name you some artists or something?

I: Sure, I guess.

1: Ok. Billie Eilish.

2: Oh yeah.

I: Ok. What does that sort of music mean to you in terms of music?

1: I would say noise with a sort of rhythm or beat kinda thing.

2: Probably something I can listen to to relieve stress too.

I: I see. What is your opinion of the musics you listen to?

1: I don’t know. I like it.

2: Its good.

1: Yeah. It has good meaning behind it most times.

2: Yeah. Like the lyrics and all.

I: What sort of meaning do you get from it?

1: I don’t know. It just kinda depends. Some of it is inspirational I guess.

2: Yeah. It can also be motivational in some way or it could be really sad sometimes.

I: Why do you listen to that music in the first place?

1: It is really just something I can focus on for like school work and such.

2: Yeah. I guess it is something in the background so it isn’t silent and such.

I: So how did you two encounter that sort of music in the first place?

2: I guess it is from other people and just from the other popular songs that people listen to.

1: I use a spotify playlist. They like make the music and show me more I listen to.

I: What sort of interactions do you have with the music you are involved with? Like, do you make the music, go to concerts, or just plain listen to it.

1: Probably just listen to it mainly.

2: Yeah. I mostly listen to it. Maybe, I occasionally dance to it but yeah, I don’t have any musical skills.

I: Now then, what is alternative music to you?

1: When I think of that, I always think of Fall Out Boy and kinda like the rock.

2: Yeah the rock music. What is it?

1: I don’t know. I guess it is kinda like the grungier side of music. I still like it but … Oh yeah! There is Panic at the Disco. It is just some bands like that.

I: Any examples or favorites?

1: Fall Out Bot!

2: Yeah, I really like Fall Out Boy. I also like Panic at the Disco too.

1: Those are our favorites.

I: Ok. What sort of associations do you have with the words ‘metal’ or ‘goth’ music?

1: I think of metal as really loud and screaming.

2: Yeah screaming. I think it is also loud instrumentally too.

I: What sort of perceptions do you have of it?

1: It is not really my personal favorite but if other people like it, then yeah.

2: No negative views really. But I wouldn’t listen to it.

I: Why does this sort of thought come to you anyway?

1: Like why don’t I like it or?

I: Like what makes you have that sort of opinion anyway?

1: I’d say it is like a lot of stereotypes that comes from people or TV shows. It is really a lot about the common misconceptions of it.

2: Yeah.

I: I see. Can you give me your best descriptions of what you think the genre sounds like?

1: I would say that is really from a lot of experimental types of music like they are not fitting in to sounding the same.

2: Yeah, like they sound similar or more willing to try different things.

I: Where did you get that sort of description of that sound anyway?

1: I guess from just what I heard. There is a similarity to it and all but they are just more willing to try to do different sort of things and that.

I: Could you elaborate on that?

1: I don’t really have that sort of specifics.

2: Yeah, I don’t know really. Just what I heard.

I: How much do you know about the subcultures associated with them?

1: I really don’t know much.

2: Yeah, I really don’t know anything associated with that.

I: Do you know anyone associated or involved with the genres and subcultures related to it?

1: No. I don’t think so.

2: Not that I know of.

I: What do you think of the people related to the genre?

1: Its like ‘you do you’ . It is like-

2. Yeah, really like whatever helps you through life and that.

1: It is whatever they focus or look forward to really.

I: Do you think the media has any impact of the image of the genre and subcultures?

1: Yeah.

2: I am sure it does. I mean like, the media does impact our everyday life and so I say it does have an impact.

I: What sort of impact do you think it has?

1: I think that when they talk about it on a sort of show they treat it more as a joke or something like that.

2: Like as a joke like it is not something to listen to or like. Sometimes people really don’t think it through and its like their voice is not something as soothing or sound.

I: What is you take on the media’s perception of the subcultures and genres?

1: I guess I never really paid that much attention to it and stuff.

2: Yeah, it is not something you see worked into a tv show or movies and stuff.

I: Ok. What is you opinion of the media’s take on your favorite music?

1: I listen to a lot of current things.

2: Yeah. I’d say a lot of people know it since I see lots of people talk about it?

I: Why do you think people brings so many people together?

1: I think it is because it is relatable.

2: Yeah. Like, people just like the lyrics or the way it sounds.

1: Yeah. Relatable, it gives people something to relate to one another.

I: Do you believe the genres of music have any sort of relevance in today’s culture or society? Musical and or otherwise?

1: I feel like some rappers make it real world.

2: Yeah, but I don’t think that real world issues is something to go off of.

1: I would say that a lot of music is influenced by real world things like a break up someone having a hard time. Like it is influenced or embellished.

I: Anything else you would like to say about all of this?

1: No, I’m good.

2: Yeah, me too.

I: Thank you for your time.
