Video Essay Transcript

My video will be about how colonization isn’t always a good thing. Naturally, I would talk about what colonization is. I will be using left over notes from a previous social anthropology class I attended. I will also try to find some videos to feature in my video too. To me, colonization is about how to make one part of the world as the standard for the rest of the world. But this video is about how I will explain why it isn’t always a good thing. Naturally, I would try to explain the effects of colonization to the best of my ability. I would use evidence for the video too. I would mostly use historical events such as Columbus discovering the Americas. I would also try to use some information about the expeditions of Ponce de Leon. My effect to explain is how they brought diseases to the Americas. Ponce de Leon waged war for a bunch of gold from native tribes. I would also see if I could use the Disney movie, Pocahontas, mainly from its effect of how the expeditioners and Native Americans use the song, Savages, to other each other. I would also explain othering and its effect. The effect of othering is how people would perceive any opposing views as a sort of harm or evil to them. My main argument would be surrounding about how Franz Boas traveled to the north only to know how ill prepared he was. This is about how he perceived the natives as primitive to his kind. He would learn from his travel that he is actually the primitive one in that land. In actuality, the natives are the most advanced in that land because they fully understand the hardship of their lifestyle and have prepared to be able to sustain life to the fullest by adapting. My final argument would be about the movie N!ai; The Story of a Kung Woman. I will try to feature a few clips from that movie as real evidence of how globalization/ colonization can affect a tribe. The movie is a biographical documentary surrounding the life of N!ai, a young girl from a tribe known as the Kung. The film follows her from her childhood to her adult years.
